ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A man who escaped custody in Wyoming more than eight months ago has been arrested and accused of stabbing of an employee at a well-known Albuquerque grocery store.

That employee was hospitalized in stable condition. The incident happened Monday at the Lowe's grocery on 11th St near Lomas downtown.

APD's violent crimes unit responded to the investigation and officers arrested 53-year-old Douglas Short. Police say he is a wanted fugitive out of Wyoming.

According to the criminal complaint, two Lowe's employees saw Short grab a bottle of alcohol and try to hide it in his clothing. Short attempted to leave the store, but the two employees cut him off and one asked for the bottle back.  That's when police say Short punched the employee in the head and the employee punched him back.

A scuffle ensued and employees were able to get Short to the ground. Police say Short complained that "he could not breath," and the employees agreed to release pressure in holding him down if he would sit still.  The second they released pressure, police say Short pulled out a knife, jumped off and then ran toward the doors.

One employee pursued him and tried to take him down and was stabbed in the process. Police say he underwent surgery and is in stable condition.

One neighbor, Rowan Wymark, said police found the suspect hiding behind a bush in one of her neighbor's yards.
"It really isn't too bright is it to hide in someone's backyard," he said. "It's quite a ways to come."

The manager at Lowe's directed calls for comment to the company's corporate offices. Phone calls there were not returned.

According to court records, Douglas Short had served nearly 10 years of a sentence for conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery in Wyoming, when he was released into a work-release program in May 2017. Less than a month later, Short was reported to have escaped custody and authorities were unable to locate him.
