ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Albuquerque Police Department spent Tuesday night investigating a death in Taylor Ranch.
Police were called to the 6600 block of Meadow Lake Place around 7:45 p.m. Officers found Isaiah Martinez, 17, who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
"They came out with a body bag," said Dan Cordova, who lives in the area. "There were three police officers, or EMS, that came out with a body bag."
Martinez died at UNM Hospital. Police said his death appears to have been an accident.
A friend of Isaiah's said he was a student at Cibola High School, and he wasn't one to mess with guns or drugs.
"He stayed away from stuff like that," the friend said. "He was one of those kids... that reminded you that there was more to life than that and brought positive out of people. You never surrounded himself with that. Never... he was a good kid."
Multiple friends of Martinez stopped by his house and placed flowers on top of his car.
"Fly high in the sky, bro," Martinez's friend said. "Watch over all of us."
APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said officers are still gathering additional evidence and waiting on autopsy results.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for his funeral expenses.
