ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Westbound I-40 is back open following a fiery crash between a motorcycle and semi-truck.
First responders were called to the area just after 1 a.m. Wednesday. They arrived on scene to find a semi-truck engulfed in flames under the Coors bridge in the westbound lanes of I-40. Officers say the heat and intensity of the fire caused the fuel tanks to explode, compromising the structural integrity of the bridge.
Department of Transportation officials were called out to examine and clear the bridge.
According to police, their initial investigation found that the motorcyclist was traveling west on I-40 at a high rate of speed when he became separated from the bike. The motorcycle became lodged under the semi-truck, causing the fire.
The motorcyclist was hit by several vehicles traveling west on I-40 and died on scene.
Police say speed and alcohol appear to be a factor.
