Inspired by family heritage, Vinaigrette owner to open new restaurant with goal of 'uplifting' patrons

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – It's a new concept with old roots.
Vinaigrette on Central Avenue has been thriving for years, and now the owner is back with a new idea, one that is inspired by a popular Santa Fe shop.
It's not quite ready yet, but inside Modern General – a restaurant with a selection of books and other items for sale – Erin Wade is making a lot of noise.
"It's a full-service restaurant and bakery and craft food emporium that we are opening on Central in West Downtown," said the business's president and owner. "This is all about craft and tradition and preserving these traditional ways of making food."
You can thank Wade's grandma for her no-nonsense attitude.
"My grandma was an incredible cook," she said. "She had this amazing palate, but she was super picky."
She's adopted that personality with her business. Not just in terms of the food they serve, but the atmosphere as well.
"We want people to feel better when they leave than when they came in," she said. "We want people to feel uplifted."
That's why Modern General is bright, fun and full of life…literally. One wall bears the words "Tools For A Better Life," and is decorated with historic tools.
"The store's so much about heritage, too, that I kind of like the idea of having these historic tools that connect us to that," Wade said.
There's something for everyone at Modern General, and the good vibes extend to the restaurant next door.
It's called The Feel Good.
"It's a little bit like yin and yang," Davis said. "Modern General is a place where you come to have a green smoothie and go conquer the world. The Feel Good is where you come when you've been kicked around a little bit (and) you need a glass of Rose and a hug."
The menu and space are all inspired by her grandma and the other ladies in her family she learned to cook from.
"It's tradition-driven, not chef-driven," she said.
Old roots…that are becoming new ideas.
