ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Watching American Ninja Warrior, it’s clear that it takes a lot of time to train. But for one New Mexico ninja, that’s not so easy to come by. She’s also busy saving lives and giving other people reasons to believe.

Watching Favia Dubyk swing from ring to ring, it’s hard to believe she’s only trained at Ninja Force Gym for a few months. Dubyk masters more than the indoor course; she rock climbs in her spare time and even moved to New Mexico with the mountains as her backyard. But “spare time” can be hard to come by, since most of her hours are spent saving lives as a pathology resident through UNM Hospital.

“I love that I get to help people every day,” Dubyk said. “Giving them a diagnosis whether they have cancer, infection, I help them move on to the next step in their treatment process, and that feels really good.”

She chose UNMH after undergraduate school at Harvard University, graduate school at Columbia University and medical school at Case Western. Though the athletic and academic feats she’s beat are impressive, they aren’t the only challenges she’s faced.

“Going through med school I had cancer myself,” Dubyk said. “And I just took baby steps to get back on my feet, back to the gym, and just never stopped working toward my main goal.”

She hopes her newest goal-- becoming American Ninja Warrior—will help more than herself.

“I hope people will be inspired to work really hard and keep trying and you can get your dreams,” Dubyk said.

KOB4 will be watching for Dubyk’s date on the show and will share it on-air and online.
