ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Anthony Mathis hit a three-point shot as time was winding down to lift the Lobos to an 87-84 victory over Cal State Northridge.

The Lobos started the game slowly, only scoring two points in the first four minutes. However, they gained momentum as the half wore. They went into the break tied, 42-42.

The final five minutes was back and forth, with both teams taking the lead. But it was Mathis' last-second shot that sealed the deal.

Despite the excitement of winning the season opener, Mathis said the team has a lot to work on in practice.

"We hold ourselves to such a high standard, but tonight, it just didn't translate from practice so we got a lot to work on," Mathis said.

The Lobos will play an exhibition game Saturday against Northern New Mexico. Their regular season will continue Tuesday when they take on Iona.
