Murder trial to begin for man accused of killing Army medic

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The murder trial for the man accused of gunning down an Army medic at an Albuquerque ATM is set to get begin today.


Police say Matthew Chavez shot and killed 24-year-old Tyler Lackey in 2016.

KOB spoke with Lackey's mother, Liz Frank, in February. She said she wants to see Chavez locked up as long as possible.

Chavez is already serving time for a robbery in Oklahoma and was also sentenced to three years for robbing an Albuquerque Cricket Wireless store just days before the deadly shooting.

He is facing several charges including first-degree murder in the trial that begins today.
