ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - It was his job to keep inmates at the Metropolitan Detention Center safe. Instead, a corrections officer is now locked up in jail accused of raping an inmate.

Johnny Reveles, 22, made his first court appearance by video from the Metropolitan Detention Center Tuesday afternoon. The jail corrections officer is accused of raping a female inmate.

According to a criminal complaint, the inmate told deputies Reveles raped her inside a closet at the jail. Reveles and the victim were allegedly seen on video going into the closet together for 5 minutes.

Court documents state Reveles admitted to having sexual relations with the inmate in the closet but he told investigators the encounter was consensual.

As the investigation continues, an MDC official said Reveles no longer has a job at the jail.

“The accused corrections officer has been terminated. Due to the ongoing investigations no further details can be released at this time,” said Candace Hopkins, MDC Public Information Specialist.

Reveles is charged with one count of criminal sexual penetration.

Prosecutors want a judge to keep him in jail until he goes to trial. He’ll remain in jail until a District Court judge decides whether to grant the motion.
