ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Neighbors near Belen Middle School say they are short on patience and sleep. The school confirms the security system is somehow being triggered in the middle of the night.
The school says it's not because of break-ins, but they don't know what is tripping the systems.
Neighbors are annoyed, to say the least.
“Just like a car alarm: beep beep beep,” said Samuel Saiz, who lives across the street from Belen Middle School. “It's a siren, it’s ridiculous. Aggravating. I feel like shooting the speakers off of the building."
“Like beep, several times," said Jose Sisneros, a neighbor. "3 o’clock in the morning, 1 in the morning, 12 at night.”
Neighbors are so fed up with the alarm that they recorded it.
”I heard it all day Saturday, all day Sunday,” said Marianne Jarosick. “I've contacted the superintendent, the school itself, Principal Sanchez. I woke up this morning at 3:30 a.m. when my fiancé goes to work and it was still going off.”
Marianne Jarosick says it's keeping her kids up.
“This little one is waking up throughout the night,” she said. “I'm sure others are waking up at night, it sounds like a car alarm at your door. It's not something you can just tune out we can hear it from the fan and the TV coming off."
The Belen Consolidated Schools Superintendent Diane Vallejos says they're aware of the alarm and are working to fix it, but aren’t sure what’s triggering it. They are trying to narrow down what could be setting it off. They did say it's a newer alarm system tied into old wiring.
Neighbors say they are worried about when the alarm actually goes off for a real reason.
“No one is going to pay attention to it," Sisneros said.
