New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair to hold its final show

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - After 57 years, a place where many of New Mexico's talented artists got their start is officially saying "farewell."
The New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair will hold its last event June 22 - June 24.
Charlie Carrillo has displayed his art for decades at the New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair. He even has pieces at the Vatican.
He says he's sad to see the end come to the New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair. The non-profit could not raise enough funds to keep it running.
“I think art is a window to our soul,” said Charlie Carrillo. “There's going to be a lot of souls we don't see anymore at the New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair.”
Carrillo specializes in retablos, painting saints on pine with natural colors.
His grandchildren have found a love for the same type of art.
“What I'm doing with them ensures that what we're doing survives,” explained Carrillo.
Carrillo says his love for arts started at a young age. He says his grandmother would get a new coloring book every time she got her medication.
“Art tells a story. That's why I love it. It tells a story,” said Carrillo.
That story will keep going, even if a chapter ends at the art fair.
“Over the last 5 years we’ve seen a decrease by about 80 percent in our funding,” said Ron Behrmann, the Executive Director of the New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair.
