ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico leaders are responding to the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich
“Today we celebrate one of our democracy’s central pillars – the peaceful transfer of power. We turn the page on a dark chapter in our nation’s history and, with renewed hope, begin taking bold actions to help rebuild our communities.
“I look forward to working alongside President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to take on the COVID-19 pandemic armed with facts and science, ramp up an effective and equitable vaccine distribution plan, address systemic racial injustice, fix our broken immigration system, confront the climate emergency, and rebuild our economy so that every American can thrive.
“I am pleased that President Biden is rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement and the World Health Organization and proposing comprehensive immigration reform that includes a fair pathway to citizenship for the millions of undocumented people who are already contributing to our country. With his words and actions, President Biden has already sent the strong signal that America and American values are back.
“As we confront numerous difficult challenges, I am confident that President Biden is the leader we need to take big, bold action and renew the promise of the American dream.”
U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Lujan
“Today, the American people, and millions of viewers around the world, watched the historic inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The peaceful transition of power is a time honored tradition in our democracy, and once again America demonstrated to the world that governance by the people will always prevail. President Biden’s message of healing and unity shows that our country is ready for a new direction, one that will allow us to build back better.
“The Biden-Harris administration today took action to strengthen America’s response to COVID-19, at home and abroad; extend federal eviction and foreclosure moratoriums and pause student loan payments; act on climate and protect America’s public lands and sacred sites; protect our Dreamers; and advance racial equity and justice. I look forward to working with my congressional colleagues and the new administration to bring our country together and deliver on the priorities of New Mexicans and the American people.”
Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernández
“Today marks the beginning of a bright, new chapter for our country. President Biden will lead us into this historic moment with deep policy experience grounded in wisdom forged from the deep pain of tragedies. Vice President Kamala Harris' own lived experience as a daughter of immigrants, who’s Senatorial voice spoke for so many, will help guide our climb out of the chasm and to the mountaintop. We have in President Biden and Vice President Harris, “leaders with great souls...and ready hands,” as Dr. King called for. They bring a team of public servants who value truth and lead with empathy. Across our government, we are united in our mission to protect Americans and to create the conditions for our communities to thrive.
"I know Congress and the new administration will rise to the challenge of this transformative moment to bring lasting structural change. We must become the country that not only promises, but delivers, opportunity, justice and equality - for all. Let’s care enough for each other that we dedicate ourselves to using science to save lives and our planet. Let’s empower every American with the tools that our democracy offers.
"Now, let’s get to work.”
Congresswoman Deb Haaland
“As we celebrate the inauguration of our 46th President and 49th Vice President of the United States, I am filled with hope for the future. Our families and communities are facing interlocking challenges of a global pandemic, economic crisis, coming to terms with the impacts of institutional racism, and a climate crisis. I am confident that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will steer us through these turbulent times and together we will build back better than before,”
Congresswoman Yvette Herrell
“It was a nice ceremony and I appreciate the work of the law enforcement, as well as the National Guard from New Mexico and around the country, in ensuring everyone's safety."
“The new president’s speech focused on the national unity many have called for these last few weeks. Bringing Americans together will start with giving everyone a seat at the table when critical issues are being discussed. Governing unilaterally and by executive order, instead of resolving issues through debate and legislation, shuts out the voice of the American people who sent each of us here to work together.
“As I wrote this week to President Biden with 16 of my newly elected colleagues, “the constituencies we represent showcase the variety of thought across our great nation.” It is important that diversity of thought and those different ideas are considered before making decisions that will affect the lives and livelihoods of New Mexicans and their families.”
