TIJERAS, N.M.— At the Museum of the American Military Family, Juan Jacquez and his daughter, Danielle Lucero, received a surprise that has been a long time coming.

From 1969-1973, Jacquez was a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

He began to receive POW bracelets with his name on them months after he returned home.

“Altogether, I think there was, I would say at least 80 to 100 bracelets that I received in the past when I first came back,” said Jacquez.

Millions of bracelets were made in the 70s to keep POW’s memories alive.

On Wednesday, Jacquez received another bracelet that a Virginia woman named Lesly Cassar found in a closet.

She bought the bracelet in her early teens, more than 40 years ago.

“Well actually, this feels like a special bracelet cause it took so long to reach (sic) it’s supposed to be at,” said Jacquez.

For Jacquez, the bracelets are more than pieces of jewelry.

“It shows that they appreciate what we did for our country and for our freedom. That’s the way that I, that I take it. That they were these bracelets in remembrance and appreciation for what we did,” said Jacquez.

The support of his country, shown through bracelets and prayers, is what Jacquez and his daughter say got him back home.

“What I went through and the experience that I had, I wouldn’t change nothing. I would do it all over again if I had to cause the experience that I learned, I learned to appreciate life,” said Jacquez.
