New Mexico State Police veteran honored in procession

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- New Mexico State Police are mourning one of their own this weekend – a longtime veteran of the force who died from a medical episode while on duty Saturday, according to officials.

Sergeant Thomas Vitale served in the department for 18 years and leaves behind a wife and three children, an NMSP release states. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army.

"This tragic incident leaves us mourning the life of an extraordinary man," State Police Chief Pete Kassetas is quoted as saying in the release. "While we mourn the passing of Sgt. Vitale, we are blessed to have known him."

A procession heading for Las Cruces left Albuquerque at 5 p.m. Sunday.
