New Mexico United defeats Colorado Rapids in penalty kicks

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- New Mexico United is moving on to the final 16 of the U.S. Open Cup.

United defeated the Colorado Rapids Wednesday night on the road, but in front of a crowd full of fans from New Mexico.

Devon Sandoval got United on the board early with a goal in the third minute of the game.

However, the Rapids would even the game up before halftime. Colorado would add to their lead early in the second half.

They would hold onto the 2-1 lead until the 94th minute. Kevaughn Frater scored with a strike from outside the penalty box.

The game would move on to penalty kicks after both teams failed to score in overtime.

During the shootout, United scored all four the penalties taken while the Rapids missed two penalty shots.

United will learn who they will play next in the tournament on Thursday.

This was United's first game against an MLS team.
