NMSP sergeant taken to hospital following crash that left 1 dead

RIO RANCHO, N.M.- A New Mexico State Police officer was taken to a local hospital Tuesday afternoon after being hit by a wrong-way driver.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. According to police, the police sergeant was traveling north on Unser near Mariposa  when an SUV crossed the center line and crashed into the officer's vehicle.

The passenger of the vehicle that was driving the wrong way died at the scene. The driver was taken to a local hospital. His condition is not known. The police sergeant was also taken to a hospital where he was listed as "stable."

Police are trying to determine what caused the vehicle to cross into the northbound lane.
