NMSP says the officer exchanged fire with a suspect on I-25, near Lead/Coal Avenue, when he pulled over a blue Honda sedan for speeding around 2:30 a.m. After the officer noticed "the license plate on the vehicle was not consistent with paperwork in the vehicle," a struggle began between a passenger in the car and the officer, officials say.

The officer was shot in the left leg, and he fatally shot the unidentified passenger. The driver has not been identified by state police.

The NMSP officer was taken to UNM Hospital to be treated for his injuries. He was released later in the day.

State police is still investigating the altercation.
