Fire burns in the northern portion of the Sandia Mountains

TIJERAS, N.M. – Firefighters began battling a fire detected around 9 p.m. Monday in the Sandia Mountains.

The North Peak Fire was reportedly on the north portion of the mountains between the Piedra Lisa Trail and the Osha Loop Trail. It burned about a quarter of an acre, but officials say it's still smoldering.

Fire officials say the cause appears to be lightning and although moisture helped Tuesday, the fire danger remains very high.

There are Stage II restrictions in place in the Sandia Ranger District.
