ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Albuquerque Police Department is investigating an overnight homicide in southwest Albuquerque. This marks the 74th homicide this year – breaking the city's homicide record.

APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said that police received a call about a shooting at 1401 Chester Lane SW, near Sunset and Bridge Sunday night.

Jonathan Mendosa, 28, allegedly shot and killed Cesar Humberto Valencia Jr., 27, before fleeing the scene on foot.

According to a criminal complaint, Mendosa and Valencia Jr. were staying in homes near each other. Police said Mendosa went to Valencia Jr.'s home--- and was told not to come back.

That's when Mendosa shot Valencia Jr., according to a witness who was inside the house.

The witness told police that she believed Mendosa lived up nearby. Police eventually located him, and took him into custody.

KOB 4 asked Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller about the record-breaking homicide. He provided the following statement:

“Violent crime is our community’s biggest challenge and tackling it is our top priority. We are working to climb out of the hole and rebuild a depleted police department. Our first 100 new officers are just hitting the streets and we are on target to bring in 100 next year. In the meantime, we are doing everything we can to modernize our systems, bring offenders to justice, and to interrupt these cycles of violence. It takes all of our partners in law enforcement at every level working together to stem the tide of violence.”
