ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In the past week, more than 40 vehicles have been stolen in Albuquerque.

Police know it's a major problem in the city and they say they have been adding resources to detour those wanting to play Grand Theft Auto in real life.

"Property crime offenders turn into violent crime offenders, that's why we're putting such a focus on auto theft because we know it's a nexus to other violent crimes," said officer Simon Drobik of the Albuquerque Police Department.

Police say they have an auto theft task force in place, bait car programs running, and teams working to get cars back.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau released its list of top stolen cars in 2017:

  • Honda Civic, 1998
  • Honda Accord, 1997
  • Ford Pickup, 2006
  • Chevrolet Pickup, 2004
  • Toyota Camry, 2017

In New Mexico, the list of top stolen cars looks a bit different:

  •  Chevrolet Pickup, 2006
  •  Ford Pickup, 2004
  •  GMC Pickup, 2005
  •  Dodge Pickup, 2001
  •  Honda Civic, 1998

Police say there are things people can do to protect their vehicles.

"Simple things like getting a club, they are $40," said Drobik. "Getting a good car alarm is a good idea too, it's still in effect. If your car comes with options like OnStar or LoJack is an option and you can afford it you should probably do it."

In addition to the vehicles on the National Insurance Crime Bureau's list, Drobik said newer models of Hyundai sedans have been targeted in Albuquerque.
