ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Police in Rio Rancho say they are working to take into custody a suspect they believe is involved in the death of a 7-year-old child.

That happened on Moonstone between Northern and Southern in Rio Rancho sometime Saturday morning; police were called out around 10:20 a.m.

RRPD Captain Ron Vigil said officers are waiting on a search warrant to gather evidence from the residence.

"We are very early in this investigation," he added. "We want to reassure the public that we have assigned additional resources to the investigation."

It was also still too early to determine if the suspect has any significant history with the state welfare workers. Vigil said police are working with representatives from the Children, Youth and Families Department.
