ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Some pranksters are putting lives at risk on the New Mexico Rail Runner, having struck for the second time in a matter of days.

Mid-Region Council of Governments Spokesperson Augusta Meyers said two men, both roughly 20 years old, were spotted placing ballast on the tracks near Santa Fe Friday night; the second time such an incident has happened this week.

A Rail Runner conductor was able to stop the train just in time earlier this week when he noticed people placing planks and rocks on an upcoming stretch of track, preventing a potentially deadly incident.

"If the train hits it at the right trajectory or at a certain speed, it could cause that train to derail," Meyers said.

The incidents have been reported to police as MRCOG officials remind the public they are trespassing if they are within 20 feet of either side of the track and not on a platform.
