The Rio Rancho Astronomical Society was celebrating Astronomy Day at the Rainbow Park Observatory. Before dark, attendees had the chance to check out the sun using a solar telescope, but the real show happened after dark.

"You've got to celebrate Astronomy Day in New Mexico because New Mexico is the place to look at the night sky," Jim Greenhouse said. "We've got lots of places you can go where you can make out the Milky Way and the dimmer stars and other objects in the night sky."

International Astronomy Day first started in 1973 with the goal of setting up telescopes so anyone can learn and enjoy astronomy for themselves.
