RIO RANCHO, N.M. – Police in Rio Rancho say they are investigating the death of a 6-year-old girl as a homicide after a discovery made Saturday morning.

RRPD Captain Ron Vigil initially said Saturday afternoon that the victim was 7 years old.

For hours they were attempting to serve a search warrant to collect evidence from the home of an unidentified man Vigil said may be connected. On Sunday afternoon they were searching the residence, on the 200 block of Moonstone.

It's unclear if police made any arrests, but Vigil said Sunday that they "are not seeking any outstanding subjects at this time." They have conducted interviews with those living in the residence.

Authorities also have not said how the victim may have died, but Vigil said the Office of the Medical Investigator was to perform an autopsy, and the results are not expected to be immediately revealed.

The Children, Youth and Families Department is also involved in the investigation, as well as the FBI.
