ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Albuquerque Police have released more details on a northeast Albuquerque shooting involving a security guard.

Police say the security that patrols the grounds of the Movies 8, on San Mateo just north of Montgomery, broke into a couple's apartment and was shot. According to APD, the security guard reportedly knew both of the people inside.

"I just thought I was dreaming," said Lisa Cuevas, who was sleeping at Sedona Ridge Apartment Friday morning when she woke to the loud gunfire. "I did hear the bullets, and there was a lot. A lot of bullets shooting back and forth."

Police say the incident started when the armed guard left his post at the Movies 8 to go to the apartments, where he tried to contact a woman who lives there.

"The female either had a boyfriend or a friend there," APD Spokesperson Simon Drobik said. "The security guard actually became belligerent and jumped a fence, smashed a back window to the apartment and the homeowner inside was in fear for his life."

Police say the man inside the apartment felt threatened and opened fire in self-defense. The security guard returned fire before he was shot in the leg; no one inside the apartment was hurt during the shootout.

APD says the security guard then drove back to work at the movie theater, where he reported he'd been shot by a homeless person.

"We later found out that he had dropped a gun in the area, so he's looking at tampering with evidence and other felony charges because of his actions," Drobik said.

The guard is expected to survive and will face those charges once he is released from the hospital.

KOB reached out to the security company, Vec-Sec, and they do not have any comments at this time.
