ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Shots were fired as police encountered a robbery suspect in northeast Albuquerque Wednesday evening.

Police say they were called to the area of San Mateo and Comanche to a possible armed robbery. When officers arrived on the scene, they saw a man in the arroyo that matched the description of the suspect.

Police tried to make contact with the man but he ran off into a nearby neighborhood. Everything unfolded on Kiowa Avenue near San Pedro and Comanche.

Officers then heard gunshots and were contacted by a resident who told them that a man entered their home and shot and killed their dog.

Peter Sullivan was a few houses down from where that happened when he heard the commotion.

"Someone was saying something about, 'Where's the gun' or "Get the gun,'" Sullivan said.

Police were able to locate the man and a confrontation ensued. According to Albuquerque Police, at least one officer fired shots and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect's identity has not been released.
