State auditor examining Lobo Athletics cuts after complaints

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The controversial cutting of four UNM sports programs by university administrators has a top state regulatory official looking into its books.

New Mexico State Auditor Wayne Johnson told KOB his office is closely examining Lobo Athletics after the Board of Regents in August voted to cut men’s soccer, women’s beach volleyball and both ski teams.

According to Johnson, his office received multiple complaints regarding the decision.

"We have received some complaints that perhaps they miscalculated the savings from cutting the four sports they did," he said. "We’re taking a look at that to make sure their math was done correctly, or perhaps it wasn’t and the problem is that some of the savings may have not been realized through scholarships.”

As KOB previously reported, administrators said the move would save the university $1.1 million, including more than $460,000 that would have been doled out in scholarships.

“(They) have just been moving money from one campus to another," Johnson said. "We’re going to look at that just to inform them. It’s not a criminal problem, but we would like the regents to make informed decisions based on actual data.”

Johnson’s office was already working with UNM Athletics after the previous auditor – current Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller – released a 58-page report slamming UNM Athletics and then-Athletic Director Paul Krebs.

According to Johnson, UNM’s new athletic director, Eddie Nuñez, has been doing a good job at meeting the 10 recommendations mentioned in that report.

“Looks like they’ve resolved all but three of them,” Johnson said. “They’re not necessarily minor, but they’re things that would take a little bit of time, like a policy manual.”

Johnson told KOB any findings from his office would be made public.
