New details released in deadly deputy-involved shooting in Los Lunas

New details released in deadly deputy-involved shooting in Los Lunas

LOS LUNAS, N.M. – New Mexico State Police are investigating a deadly deputy-involved shooting in Valencia County. It happened on Saturday in the El Cerro Mission, in the southeast part of Los Lunas.

According to the NMSP Investigations Bureau, Valencia County Sheriff's deputies were conducting a stolen vehicle investigation. During the investigation, an altercation occurred between deputies and 40-year-old John Bailon of Albuquerque and Los Lunas.

At least one deputy fired shots at Bailon and he died at the scene.

The details of what led up to the shooting are being investigated. The names of the deputies involved will not be released until the investigation is completed.
