ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A car accident on Friday resulted in three men being placed in handcuffs following the discovery of some long-lost police gear.
Police say earlier this month the home of a former Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in southwest Albuquerque was broken into and burglarized. Among the stolen items were ammunition, a badge, a weapon and a tactical vest.
But those items would turn up days later just down the road from the home, following a car crash at 86th and Sunset Gardens. According to court documents, police found the stolen items in that car, and now its occupants are facing burglary charges.
The three were in court Saturday morning, where Judge Christine Rodriguez released both 18-year-old Toure Britt and 19-year-old Tyler Stevens-Smith on their own recognizance. They will be monitored by pretrial services.
Meanwhile, the state filed preventative detention for the third suspect, 22-year-old Santiago Benavidez, who has a lengthy criminal history. He's been charged with nearly 20 crimes in recent years—everything from possession of a stolen vehicle to drug possession.
Almost all of those charges have been dismissed.
