ALBUQUERQUE N.M. - People have reported a strange noise coming from the Albuquerque zoo.

“That sounds like a Yeti to me but I don't think they have any Yetis here,” one zoogoer joked.

They're right, there are not any Yeti's in New Mexico. Turns out, the sound is actually coming from the elephant exhibit.

“Alice, who is 45 years old, and Irene, who is 51 years old, [are] getting super excited and roaring because they got to spend some time with Albert, our 19-year-old bull,” said elephant manager Rhonda Saiers.

Albert may be a stud in the elephant world, but unfortunately for Alice and Irene, they are too old to get pregnant. That means Albert could be a good match for Rozie. But, since Rozie recently gave birth, that will have to wait.

“She won’t start cycling for up to a year after his birth, so these are baby steps to the possibility of Albert breeding Rozie to the next baby,” Saiers said.

So far, Rozie has only been impregnated through artificial insemination, but zookeepers are hopeful Rozie and Albert will be a match. If they aren't, the zoo still has big plans for Albert.

“So if he doesn't get to be a daddy, one of the big goals is that he gets to be a mentor for little baby Thorn because Thorn is going to need that interaction,” Saiers said. “He's going to need a big bull to play with and show him how to grow into a nice big bull.”
