ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A new study shows the average student loan debt in New Mexico comes out to about $21,000, according to the Albuquerque Business First.

That number means the state ranks second in the nation for the lowest amount of student loan debt; Utah has the lowest.

The University of New Mexico and Central New Mexico Community College were not part of the study, but statistics from UNM show the institution isn’t an outlier.

Here is the average student debt graduates leave New Mexico colleges with:

  • UNM - $21,404
  • New Mexico State - $21,402
  • New Mexico Highlands - $17,312
  • New Mexico Tech - $22,335
  • St. John’s College - $27,790
