The da Vinci surgical robot team is now doing procedures on males, as well as women.

At Lovelace, Doctor Mario Leyba is at the controls, repairing organs, removing cancerous tumors, and making surgeries minimally invasive.

Dr. Leyba says the device can even be used on prostatectomies.

That's when a part or all of the prostate gland has to be removed, usually because of cancer.

“I can actually make one small incision in the belly button, make it cosmetically look very nice. They go home the same day and the benefits are tremendous,” Dr. Leyba said.

As for the future, Dr. Leyba says smaller, more improved instrumentations are on the horizon.
