Suspicious man worries people in North Valley

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  (Jen French) - Neighbors are annoyed that a man, who has been in and out of jail, is now freely wandering their block. Homeowners want to know why the man doesn't remain behind bars.

For months, North Valley neighbors have spotted a man with a bike or backpack cruising along 12th Street or Guadalupe Trail.

Neighbors, like Carlos Herrera, have taken plenty of photos of him.

“My wife had caught him inside of our yard, one time, messing with our house when she came home from work,” Herrera said. “Then he just said, 'Oh I’m just getting some water' and I nonchalantly walked over my neighbor’s house.”

Because he has not been convicted of any felonies, KOB is choosing not to name him. Out of three felony cases he has faced, prosecutors didn’t have enough evidence to prove he had burglary tools. In a different case, a car theft victim was uncooperative. And in a third case, prosecutors are still investigating a commercial burglary that the man was allegedly involved in.

To complicate matters, Herrera describes the man’s behavior as bizarre.

“People describe him as talking to himself and walking around aimlessly, in a sense, but with purpose,” Herrera said.

Fearful for his own safety, neighbor Nicholas Koluncich has seen the man ride his bike as far as Guadalupe Trail.

“Eventually this individual is going to go to the wrong house and when he goes to the wrong house someone is going to get hurt. It could be this person or it could be somebody who actually lives there,” Koluncich said.

In an email, Bernalillo County District Attorney spokesperson Michael Patrick said their office is aware of the man’s escalating criminal behavior. Depending on the results of the current investigation against him, he could be indicted.
