ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Ask anyone who plays, and they'll say New Mexico is one of the best places in the country to play golf. The courses are picturesque and affordable.

The Duke City will soon be home to two popular golf venues that could draw more golfers to tee off.

Dallas-based Topgolf announced Wednesday they will build a giant new facility at Montano and I-25. People who've lived in Albuquerque long enough might remember when that location used to be home to The Beach waterpark. The Beach shut down in 2005, and it's been an empty pit of dirt ever since.

The 14 1/2-acre site will be home to 72 climate-controlled hitting bays, a restaurant, a bar and a large space for private events. Topgolf says about half of their customers consider themselves to be non-golfers.

"With 310 days of sunshine every year, Albuquerque is the perfect location for Topgolf because we offer fun outdoor recreation as well as entertainment in our indoor spaces," said Topgolf Chief Development Officer Chris Callaway. "The city has a growing population and distinct cultural amenities that attract a large number of visitors to the area."

Topgolf is the second facility of its kind intending to build in New Mexico. A few weeks ago, Big Shots golf announced their plans to build on 20 acres near Balloon Fiesta Park.

Big shots will have more than 80 hitting bays. Plus their renderings show there will be a guy on piano along with another guy drinking on the floor sitting next to a fish. Seriously, it's in the rendering.

Both Topgolf and Big Shots say they'll each bring more than 300 jobs to Albuquerque.

The question is this: Who will open first? If the city signs off on Topgolf in Albuquerque, it should open in spring 2019. Meanwhile, Big Shots Golf plans to open in fall 2018, just in time for Balloon Fiesta.
