TORRANCE COUNTY, N.M. - Torrance County commissioners have approved a contract to reopen the detention center there.

It will primarily house ICE detainees but will also house Torrance County inmates.

The reopening of the detention center will bring more than 250 jobs to the county, which they are currently hiring for.

The detention center closed in 2017 due to financial reasons. Since the closure, businesses closed, tax revenue dropped and about 200 former employees moved.

"It's affected everybody in some way shape or form," said Betty Caber.

Residents are hopeful the jobs will reinvigorate the community.

The plan is to have the detention center open in July.
