ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of New Mexico athletes, coaches and fans are reacting to news that four athletic teams could be cut Thursday.

“We were blindsided by it,” UNM beach volleyball player Carly Beddingfield said about Wednesday night's meeting in which she and her teammates listen with an open mind to athletic director Eddie Nunez. “He explained it well, however, we still don't necessarily agree with it and that's why we're going to try to argue it tomorrow morning,” Beddingfield said.

Coach Jeff Nelson says the team was ready for bad news if it came, but didn’t expect to be on the chopping block.

“Needing to keep head-count for women because of the Title IX stuff, compliance stuff, everybody was telling us we didn't need to worry,” Nelson said.

Now, at least four teams are worrying, with many people planning to attend Thursday’s UNM Board of Regents meeting. That includes Coach Nelson, who says he supports his athletic director, but backs up his players, too.

“The ball's in their court now,” Nelson said.
