ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Four New Mexico women's basketball players will participate in the 2018 USA Basketball 3x3 National Championships this weekend at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
Jaisa Nunn, Antonia Anderson, Madi Washington and Aisia Robertson were selected to take part. The winner of the tournament will then compete at the FIBA 3x3 World Cup this June 6-10 in Manila.
Pool play starts Saturday with the medal round on Sunday.
"It's the first time I have ever done anything like this," Nunn said. "And the fact that it has USA written all over it and it's a chance to go to the Olympics, it's a great opportunity."
The rules are slightly different than that of full 5-on-5 basketball. Games are 10 minutes long and there is a 12-second shot clock. Baskets inside the arc are one point while those outside the arc are two points.
The first team to 21 points wins. If neither team hits 21 points, whoever has the most after 10 minutes wins. Games tied at the end of the 10 minutes go to overtime and the first team to score two points wins.
"Anytime you can be related with USA Basketball, it's a big deal," UNM coach Mike Bradbury said. "There are 15different schools that have this opportunity, and then there is one team that is hand selected."
In other Lobo news, Tavian Percy signed a letter of intent and will be ready to join the UNM men's team this summer. Percy is 6-foot-6 and played at Pasadena High School. He averaged 15 points a game last season.
When they take the floor next season, the Lobos will have added 10 new players, eight under scholarship.
