Will high gas prices impact New Mexico tourism this summer?

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — As summer approaches, many travelers’ wallets are taking a hit with gas prices upwards of $4.

"For many of them, that means staying closer to home, not spending as much on entertainment or food and beverages on their trips," said Tania Armenta, president and CEO of Visit Albuquerque.

However, people are anxious to cruise the highways despite the cost.

"They really are excited to get out and about so while this is certainly unfortunate timing as far as the rise in gas prices, but that overall desire to have new experiences and adventures is overwhelming," Armenta said.

Those high gas prices could actually work in Albuquerque’s favor.

"I think Albuquerque has always been an affordable destination," Armenta said. "So that will be an attribute and appeal too this summer – our great outdoor recreation and all of the cultural experiences."

Armenta said that tourism in Albuquerque has been on the rise since the pandemic and she expects this summer to be no different.
