ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Danny Gonzales is building a new culture within the Lobo football program.

One of the rules is being on time. Tevaka Tuioti learned that the hard way. In the spring, he was two minutes late for a medical treatment, which was scheduled for 6 a.m.

Following his tardiness, Gonzales demoted Tuioti on the depth chart

"He called me out in front of the team, and that caught me by surprise," Tuioti said. "I was shocked, and he was saying, like, how I was gonna be with the twos, and you know, hearing that, it was one of the things I never wanted to hear, especially because it was right in front of everybody, so I was quite embarrassed but, you know, it only pushed me even harder to try and earn my spot back."

Gonzales has praised Tuioti for the way he responded, and on Tuesday, he was named the starting quarterback.

"For the coaches to trust me, and I'm glad they trust me enough to put this team on my shoulders, and I'm willing to do that and lead this team to a championship," Tuioti said.

Tuioti will make his 12th career start Oct. 24 when the Lobos open the season at Colorado State.
