ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico United’s Daniel Bruce and Ken Akamatsu have a few things in common.

They are both midfielders who traveled to the United States to play soccer.

Bruce, who is from England, college soccer in college at UNC Charlotte.

“Coming from Manchester, in England, [there was] a lot of it adapting to new places and new people,” Bruce said.

Akamatsu went from Japan to the University of Denver.

Upon arriving in the Mile High city, he enrolled in language school so he could learn English.

He said getting help on the field allowed him to pick up the language faster.

“Soccer was the most helpful thing to learn, to live and to make a friend, he said. “Like, if I was not on the team, I don't think I could have learned that much."

Starting their professional soccer careers in the Land of Enchantment will be something both Bruce and Akamatsu said they will remember forever.

“It's been great,” Akamatsu said. “People super welcome people are warm and they are, like, friendly, like, the food is good, so it's been a great experience it's been a fun time."

“The scenery here in New Mexico is absolutely breathtaking,” Bruce said. “The mountains, sunsets, obviously, the people here are fantastic.”

New Mexico united will play its first European opponent in franchise history on Thursday.

They host Cardiff City FC on Thursday.

Kickoff at the UNM Soccer Complex is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
