Lobo football: Defensive line looking to make some noise

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Lobo football is looking to make some noise in the Mountain West. The defensive line wants to be a big part of that.

Coming off another subpar season, the Lobo defensive line has a lot to prove.

"It's looking great, I think we have a really solid, you know, front line on the first train," said Aaron Blackwell. "Then building that depth through this fall camp and it's going to look really clean and crisp."

Senior Aaron Blackwell came on strong in 2018, earning All-Mountain West Honorable Mention.

He's not shy to speak up. He backs up his words with nonstop intensity.

"I just want to set the tempo, you know, out of the gate I want to be violent, physical, I want people to be enjoying themselves, screaming, having fun," Blackwell said. "No one likes quiet stadiums, that's my least favorite thing in the world."

There's no Lobo more hungry than senior Trent Sellers. He missed all of last season with a knee injury.

Expectations are high for the Georgia Tech transfer. Sellers embraces the challenge.

"What happened last year really helped me step up my mental game as well as my leadership role because I couldn't do anything physically," Sellers said. "So I was just trying to be there for my guys, you know, encourage them so now that I'm back out there I just try to carry that out there and still trying to be a good leader – that guy in the defense that everybody can look to."

"Glad to have Trent back of course, that's the heartbeat for us," said Erin Austin. "We got our heartbeat back, we ready to go."

Austin played in nine games in his first year at New Mexico. The senior says he's ready to take on a bigger role.

"Quiet leader, I just keep my head down, do what I'm supposed to," Austin said. "You'll probably never hear me yelling, ever. I keep my head down at all times, make sure I do everything right."
