ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The season was looking pretty good for the UNM baseball team before the rest of their season was canceled due to COVID-19.

Lobo head baseball coach Ray Birmingham has spent the last 55 years either playing or coaching baseball in the spring and now he’s left wondering that the season would have been for the Lobos.

While winter sports are still waiting to see if their seniors will be able to return, spring sports have been granted that option, but Birmingham real focus is on the players of the future.

“Power five might have enough money to do that but we don't. You rotate your money and it's coming to the new guys coming in,” Birmingham said.

Last Thursday was supposed to be opening day in major league baseball, and for baseball all over the country.

“You always look forward to this. This is like Christmas for me. When I was a kid it was box scores the next morning so it's sad, it's sad,” Birmingham said.

As for the Lobo program returning this season, Birmingham is taking a wait-and-see approach.
