ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — It's not a stretch to say that UNM women's golf has one of the smartest rosters in the country. This year, they hit the books better than anyone.
At the college level, balancing studies and sports is no easy task.
Academically, the Lobo women's golf team is the best in the nation. With a collective GPA of 3.9, UNM ranks No. 1 in the NCAA.
"We worked hard this semester though, like we always keep our grades up," said Darian Zacheck. "It was a surprise to be number one, but it wasn't a surprise that we all did well."
Zacheck is a Deming native and is one of the team's five all-American scholars.
"I love representing my home state and I've known the coaches since I was probably like 12 years old," she said. "It's pretty much just been my dream to play college golf so it's awesome to represent my state."
Zacheck graduated with a degree in political science. Now she's pursuing a career in the pros.
In August, she will compete at the LGPA qualifying school in California.
"It is a little intimidating but it is part of my dream, so it's really exciting," she said. "Just keep working, use some of the skills that the coaches taught me over these four years."
