ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- UNM football head coach Danny Gonzales has named Tevaka Tuioti the starting quarterback.

Gonzales made the news official at Tuesday's press conference.

Tuioti spent the last few weeks taking reps with the second team offense. Gonzales has been impressed with his work ethic and not backing down from the challenge of competing for the starting spot.

"Instead of him having a bad attitude and thinking he's the one getting hosed he fought every day," said Gonzales. "He lead those guys. I think my favorite part of the whole thing is the entire time they were battling he coached at Trae Hall everyday and for a veteran to do that when that guy is trying to take his job shows a lot of maturity."

Last season Tuioti, who is redshirt junior, played in nine games starting seven times. He threw for 1,460 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions. He has 11 career starts heading into the October 24th season opener against Colorado State.

Trae Hall will be the backup quarterback. Connor Genal and Rio Rancho HS grad Isaiah Chavez are competing for the third spot on the depth chart.
