NM United’s playoff hopes remain uncertain following 2-0 loss

EDINBURG, TEXAS – New Mexico United’s first shutout loss since Sept. 25 put the club in a tight spot as the regular season nears the end.

Rio Grande Valley FC Toros shut out NM United, 2-0, Oct. 23. NM United is two points ahead of the Toros and Austin Bold for the final USL Championship playoff spot from the Western Conference Mountain.

NM United and Bold each have one home match left, respectively, in the regular season.

United plays Real Monarchs Salt Lake City at home, Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. Bold plays the Charlotte Independence at home, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.

The Toros have an advantage over United and Bold with two matches left: An 8 p.m. away match, Oct. 27, against Real Monarchs SLC and an 7:30 p.m. home match, Oct. 30, against El Paso Locomotive.

United has topped the Monarchs in two of their last three matches, averaging around 2 goals per match against the team.

RGV has bested Monarchs in their last three matches – averaging just over 2 goals per match – but has lost to El Paso in two of the last three matches, averaging just over 1 goal per match against them.

NM United made the USL playoffs during their inaugural season in 2019.
