ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico United got their first shutout Friday night when they beat the Real Monarchs 1-0.

The lone goal was provided by Rio Grande Valley native Chelo Martinez.

This was Martinez’s first goal as a member of New Mexico United.

Head coach Troy Lesesne said it was a big momentum swing for the club late in the first half.

"Chelo was putting in phenomenal service all night from corners from free kicks, and we were close, man, we were so close to getting a touch on it. And then we get a stroke of luck, which we haven’t had any luck I don’t think in the first six games of the season, so we will take it with no complaints and three points on the road and keep moving forward," he said.

New Mexico United will return home Saturday for Pride Night against San Antonio FC.
