ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Attorney General Hector Balderas is warning New Mexicans of an online phishing scam targeting bank accounts.
The warning comes after several reports were filed with the Attorney General's Office detailing how scammers were receiving account numbers through "phishing" for information on a banking website.
Here's how they did it: the scammers created a fake banking website that displayed an alert that read "Security Alert: Suspicious Login Noticed." The scammers had a link attached near the alert where consumers were asked to enter their banking information, passwords, debit card numbers and PIN on the link.
That link was in no way affiliated with the bank and consumers who filled out the form were sending all of their information directly to scammers.
Advocates with the Attorney General's Office are ready to help consumers who get scammed. Those who think they may have been scammed can file a complaint here or call 505-717-3500.
