ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— It comes as no surprise that when temperatures go up, so does your electricity bill.
In a little over a month, it will be summer, so changing a few things around the house now can help save you a chunk of change.
Shannon Jackson, a spokesperson for PNM, said air conditioning your home can sometimes attribute to almost 50-percent of your bill so she has a few tips and tricks that can lower that number.
“Make sure that all of your ceiling fans in your home are turning counter-clockwise,” she said. “It pushes the air downward, and it makes it feel cooler in your home.”
She added that closing the blinds and windows keeps the sun’s heat outside when you’re not home.
Also, she said a lot of people don’t unplug electronics when they’re not being used, but they should.
“Well that’s drawing something called ‘phantom energy’. Things use energy even when they’re not on, or stand by energy is another way to explain it.” Jackson said.
Incandescent lights might be cheap at the register, but Jackson said they hurt your bill, so she advises to swap them out with LED light bulbs.
A last thing she mentioned was to raise your thermostat to a comfortable but livable temperature during the summer to have a little extra money for summer fun.
