Local audiologist nominated for national award

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M - Dr. Carol Clifford, a local audiologist, spends most days in her west side practice.
“There’s no better work I could do,” Dr. Clifford said.
She meets new patients, diagnoses those who are hard of hearing, and fits them with life-changing devices. But, it's her work outside of the office that she finds most rewarding.
“As someone said, it's the hardest work I’ve ever done, and the best work I’ve ever done. It was pretty amazing,” Dr. Clifford said.
Goodwill medical missions take her to impoverished countries like Peru, where people would travel for days just for a chance to be fitted for a hearing aid.
“This mother, a single mom, had taken a five-day bus ride from Venezuela. They came in hopes of help, but no guarantee of help. And so it was just an amazing thing to have a hearing aid for this child at that point and fit him with hearing aids,” Dr. Clifford said.
And she does it on her own dime.
“No one is ever going to put on my gravestone what a great audiologist I was, they put stuff like I’m a great mother, a great person. And I’m not doing this for my tombstone, but those are the things that at the end of the day, your last breaths, those are the things that matter. The things you gave back,” Dr. Clifford said.
Now, her work is catching the attention and a nomination from hearing aid manufacturer Oticon. Dr. Clifford is in the running for an award in the 2018 Focus on People Awards.
“I was shocked when I got the nomination. Someone in the community nominated me,” Dr. Clifford said.
Should she take home the grand prize, Dr. Clifford says she plans to continue her mission of helping the hard of hearing.
