ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Dr. Linda Rose said she sees countless patients at the UNM clinic this time of year all describing the same symptoms.

“They'll just be complaining that there's sandpaper in their eye, it feels like its scratchy, it feels dry, it burns,” Dr. Linda Rose, UNM ophthalmologist said.

Blame the environment, but the corneal specialist said living in the dry desert is a big reason why so many us suffer from dry eye.

“So I simplify this and tell patients you have oily tears and watery tears and there needs to be a balance between the two,” Dr. Rose said.

That can be due to dehydration or a plugged gland near your eyelashes. While it may seem like a minor problem, Dr. Rose said chronic dry eye can have lasting effects.

“If we can't with medication and treatment encourage the production of watery tears this can turn into a cycle where the cornea is permanently scratched and has permanent scar tissue,” Dr. Rose said.

There's also the potential of cataract development.

“First thing is to stay hydrated because if your body is dehydrated it will hold on to water and not make enough tears,” Dr. Rose said.

She said it's important to practice good hygiene, and make sure to give your eyelashes a good wash.

"And don't forget, it’s not a good idea to sleep under a fan or anything that blows on the face directly. This will dry the ocular surface,” Dr. Rose said.
