World's smallest pacemaker offered at UNMH

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - UNM Hospital is now offering the world's smallest pacemaker for patients. It's about the size of a vitamin capsule.

The pacemaker is known as the Micra from Medtronic. It's implanted in the heart to control irregular heartbeats.

"Every day there's something new out on the market that makes our patients live better, longer healthier lives," said UNM Cardiac Cathlab Unit Director Amy Ruane.

Two patients have recently gone through the procedure at UNMH, which is said to be less invasive than prior methods.

"The Micra goes through a vein into the leg and is fed up into the heart. So there's no incision. The recovery time is significantly less and the risk of infection goes down significantly as well," said Ruane.

At this time, only certain people are candidates.

"The ideal candidate is going to be somebody whose typically older. They may have previously had an infection when they had a pacemaker implanted so it's not a great idea to put another pacemaker in a patient that's had an infection," she said.

Ruane says the pacemakers can't even be felt inside the heart and that this is just the beginning.

"I think that things are just going to get smaller and smaller and I anticipate in the next couple years pacemaker technology is going to move forward very quickly," she said.
